15. Singapore Cricket Club (by Jacelyn)

Cricket was first played in Singapore as early as 1837, and the Cricket Club was established fifteen years later in 1852. The Club’s early members came from the colonial elite, and its club presidents included several governors of the then Straits Settlements.

When Singapore fell to the Japanese on 17 February 1942, the club was closed and turned into a luxurious restaurant and bar for the Japanese military officers during the war.

During an archaeological dig on the premises of the club in 2003, locally-made earthenware, imported Chinese trade ceramics and other artefacts from the Tang and Song Dynasties, as well as Jin Dynasty coins, metal slag, glass beads and bangles were discovered.
