Brief Introduction of Civic District

The Civic District is located to the north of the Singapore River, and is part of the legacy of the master plan created by Sir Stamford Raffles, the founder of Singapore recognised by the majority.

Raffles' Town Plan in 1822 divided the hubs with the finance sector on the south bank of the Singapore River and the Civic and Government sector on the north bank.

And viola!

Civic District is here to stay.

In 1988, the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) introduced a Civic District Master Plan to restore and endorse the area as Singapore's Civic and Cultural Hub by improving the parks and tree-lined sidewalks to allow pedestrians to have a pleasant walk.

Street furniture were specially designed and added to create a unique character for this area which contains Singapore's most valuable and historic structures, parks and national monuments.

In 1995, the Civic District Lighting Plan was initiated to enhance the beauty of the district, specially illuminating the historic landmarks and parks for a distinctive night scene.
